How Green Bay got it's name:
Samuel de Champlain and Jean Nicolet made the Indian word Winnebago to Baye des Puans and that means in French, "the bay of the stinkards." It was also called "nation of stinkards." It was know for the French as "The Bay Of Stinkards." Since Green Bay has green waters it soon by the British, was named Green Bay. Historical places:

Some important events in Green Bay is the Green Bay Packer's training camp. The training camp starts in August and ends in September. The training camp gets the Packer's ready for the preseason and regular Packer games. Another important event in Green Bay is Zoo Boo. Zoo Boo is like Boo at the Zoo in Milwaukee. Zoo Boo has all sorts of fun things to do. Zoo Boo would be a good place to spend a close to Halloween night with your family. |
History
Green Bay was discovered in 1634. Samuel de Champlain went exploring and he discovered Green Bay and Jean Nicolet followed after him. Jean Nicolet created a small trading post in 1634. The trading post is one of the oldest European permanent settlements in America. Jean Nicolet met the Ho-Chunk and Winnebago tribes. Jean Nicolet stayed with the Winnebago for about a year and then returned to Quebec. A while after Jean Nicolet returned to Quebec Samuel de Champlain died. The British took control of the French territory in Wisconsin and gained control of Green bay in 1761. Wisconsin became a state in 1848 and Green Bay was officially Green Bay the city in 1854.
The Green Bay Packers is a Green Bay football team. The Packers got started when Lambeau gave the Indian Packing Company $500 what is now $6,500 today for uniforms and equipment. The Packers got that money and the field was named for Lambeau who gave them the money. That is why their home field is Lambeau field. |
